CHIROPRACTIC

Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a health care profession concerned with diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

Our chiropractor provides evidence-based treatments and management strategies following a thorough assessment to relieve pain and dysfunction from conditions of the spine as well injuries to other areas of the body from sport, work, or any activity.

This typically includes education, advice, manual (hands-on) therapy, and exercise prescription.

Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractic adjustments target stiff and restricted joints and motion segments with the intent of restoring natural movement while decreasing pain.

This is achieved through release of joint pressure, stimulation of soft tissue receptors around the joint, and short-term effects on the central nervous system.

Restoration of motion and pain relief provided is essential to complement active care and exercise to ensure regular movement and better overall function.

Active Release Technique (ART)®

ART® is a hands-on soft-tissue therapy which utilizes movement of the body to lengthen muscles that are under tension from the practitioner’s hands.

This helps to reduce tension, pain, and tissue adhesion in the affected soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, tendons, etc).

Shockwave Therapy

Radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy utilizes a high frequency of targeted sound waves to transmit signals to the tissues of the body.

These sound waves are converted to mechanical force that acts on the tissues of the body to promote a healing response on the cellular level.

This therapy has been shown to be very helpful to help treat chronic disorders of connective tissue (tendons, ligaments, joint capsules, etc).

Golf Performance & Injury Management (TPI®)

Our chiropractor is a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Medical 2 practitioner.

TPI® is a system of golf performance and injury management that focuses on how the human body moves in relation to the golf swing.

Physical limitations in the body can lead to poor performance or injury.

Treatment and exercise guided by movement assessment through the TPI® system allows for a personalized approach to rehab or performance for golfers.

Concussion Management (CCMI®)

Our chiropractor is a Complete Concussion Management Certified clinician.

We utilize concussion assessments, education, return-to-play/work/learn guidelines, exertion testing, and rehabilitation techniques according to the most up-to-date research and guidelines.

This can help reduce any worry and fear regarding concussion while efficiently guiding someone with a concussion back to sport, school, or work as quickly and safely as possible while reducing risk of long-term effects.

Drop Table Technique

A non-twisting technique that allows for body weight momentum to produce the effects of a chiropractic adjustment.

Helpful for those who are uncomfortable with traditional adjustments and for areas that pose awkward angles for a traditional adjustment, such as the hips or pelvis.

Chiropractic Care: Discover the Benefits of Evidence-Based Treatments

Exploring chiropractic care for health and wellness involves understanding how tailored adjustments can profoundly influence your body’s ability to heal and maintain optimal functionality.

Chiropractic care isn’t just about addressing back pain; it encompasses a holistic approach to enhancing overall health. Regular chiropractic care ensures that your spinal alignment is maintained, which helps in improving your nervous system function and body’s innate healing capabilities.

Chiropractic Techniques in Managing Back Pain

Exploring the realm of chiropractic care can offer significant benefits, especially when you’re dealing with persistent back pain. Chiropractic techniques are pivotal in managing pain, and they focus on active approaches to management while providing hands-on care to compliment in the short term.

Our approach at Hemlock Health prioritizes an active approach to care focusing on exercise and activity guidance to empower patients to move more and take control of their pain. We also utilize hands-on treatment including soft tissue therapies and adjustments to improve movement and function, allowing patients to get the most out of their active care.

By integrating chiropractic treatments, many individuals experience not just pain alleviation but also enhanced mobility and quality of life. As we’ve outlined, it’s clear how integral a specific treatment plan can be.

Looking ahead, it’s worth noting that the expertise of the chiropractor is essential in ensuring you receive the highest standard of care.

Remember, chiropractic isn’t just about pain relief—it’s about empowering you to move more and move better through a patient-centered approach.

Active Release & Chiropractic Adjustments

Utilizing methods like Active Release Technique, which involves specifically designed movements to treat soft tissue disorders, chiropractors can effectively decrease pain and
stiffness in the soft tissues in the body such as muscles and tendons.

Another effective treatment option is chiropractic adjustment (joint manipulation), where the chiropractor targets stiff and restricted joints using a quick thrust at their end range of motion. Contrary to popular belief, this does not move a bone back into place and instead functions to alleviate pressure on the joint and act through neurological reflexes to surrounding tissues to decrease pain and stiffness while restoring natural motion. Any pops or cracks heard during this treatment are simply the release of a nitrogen gas bubble from the joint fluid and have no bearing on the effectiveness of the treatment.

With chiropractic care, many individuals report not only a significant reduction in pain but also an improvement in range of motion and flexibility.

These forms of hands-on care are most effective when paired with active care including exercise, activity modification, and load management advice. The use of hands-on treatment in addition to active care can help manage flare-ups of pain to get patients back to full function quicker and avoid chronic disability.

Whether it’s managing chronic conditions or seeking preventative care, chiropractic techniques play a crucial role.

Shockwave & Class IV Laser Therapy

Helpful treatment options in addition to the more standard active + hands-on care include shockwave therapy and class IV laser therapy.

Shockwave Therapy utilizes high-powered sound waves from an applicator to transmit radial pressure waves (shockwaves) through the soft tissues of our body to aid in recovery from a variety of conditions. These pressure waves help address pain and tissue dysfunction through a number of theorized mechanisms including high-powered mechanotransduction, re-activation of acute inflammation to interrupt a chronic inflammatory cycle, and breakdown of dysfunctional or poorly-healed tissue on a cellular level. Because of this, shockwave therapy can be very helpful in addressing chronic soft tissue problems, especially those affecting the connective tissues
such as tendons, ligaments, and fascia. IT has specifically been seen to help in the
management of:

 Plantar fasciitis
 Achilles tendinopathy
 Calcific tendinitis
 Shin splints
 Tennis elbow
 Myofascial trigger points

Class IV Laser Therapy utilizes a high-powered powered red light to help accelerate healing. This red light exists at a wavelength that stimulates the cells of our bodies to produce more energy in the form of ATP. Our body can use this additional ATP to boost the healing process, especially in the acute stage. Class IV lasers also have the additional benefit of producing some heating effects on the tissues which can promote blood flow which in turn can provide more oxygen and beneficial substrates to the tissues which can further enhance healing. This boost tohealing makes laser therapy especially helpful for acute injuries such as sprains, strains, sports
injuries, and even minor tears or fractures.

Golf Performance & Injury Management (TPI)

Golf performance &  injury management through a TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) approach are related concepts that focus on optimizing golf performance and reducing the risk of injuries.

TPI is a leading educational organization that studies the relationship between the human body and the golf swing, providing a comprehensive approach to golf fitness, health, and junior golf development.

Golf performance injury management involves an active and biomechanical approach to
preventing and treating injuries that occur during golfing.

This includes identifying and addressing biomechanical inefficiencies, muscle imbalances, and other factors that can contribute to injuries.

A TPI evaluation and individualized performance program can provide the following benefits:

 Reduce injury risk
 Increase distance and accuracy
 Improve longevity and overall golf performance
 Enhance physical therapy and rehabilitation

TPI’s golf fitness program is based on 12 years of research studying the greatest golfers in the world, analyzing how their bodies affect their golf swings.

The program considers factors such as strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, nutrition, stability, power, vision, and posture, which all influence the body’s mechanics.

By addressing these factors, golfers can optimize their performance, reduce the risk of injury,
and improve their overall golf experience.

Concussion Management

Concussions are not a common injury but can be concerning for anyone who has sustained one. Concussion Management with a chiropractor at Hemlock Health focuses on providing appropriate education and advice to reduce fear and provide a clear path to recovery while incorporating specific and targeted rehabilitation techniques as needed.

Concussions are most common as a result of sport participation but can also occur as a result of motor vehicle accidents, workplace injuries, or just everyday activities. While they can produce some significant symptoms, concussions are the mildest form of brain injury and are largely self-limiting if given time and handled appropriately to minimize risk. Concussions differ from other forms of brain injuries in the fact that there is no structural damage with a concussion, only a functional injury that is mostly caused by an energy deficit in the brain due to an injury of rapid acceleration of the head. You do not need to take a hit to the head or experience a loss of consciousness to suffer a concussion.

In most cases of an isolated, uncomplicated concussion, symptoms will last around 10-14 days while full recovery usually occurs within 30 days. Due to the mismatch in symptom improvement and actual recovery of the brain, care must be taken before returning to high-risk activities such as sports. Returning to such activities solely based on symptoms can leave the brain vulnerable to a worse injury. Because of this, it is best to seek the help of a professional trained in concussion management so they can help guide you through the process and ensure your brain is recovered before you are safe to return to your activities.

Management of concussion involves a comprehensive assessment that guides advice on return to physical activity, work/school, sport, and all other activities of life. Additional rehabilitation strategies such as visual therapy, vestibular therapy, and neck treatment may be added on a case-by-case basis as your treating professional sees fit. This is where more standard chiropractic care may overlap with concussion management, but this is only in specific cases and upon consent of the patient.

Concussions can be a scary thing but when they are managed promptly and appropriately, the fear can go away and patients can get back to their lives safely, efficiently, and with peace of mind that they do not need to experience ongoing concerns.
